It was announced this morning that noted Lincoln scholar Gabor S. Boritt has passed away at the age of 86.

He was a kind and generous man, to which I can personally testify. Founder of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg and a towering giant in the Lincoln field.

Paragraph from article in today's New York Times:

Boritt worked briefly in a hat factory in New York before heading west, to find what he had been told was the real America. Along the way, he used a booklet of Lincoln’s writings to teach himself English.
