RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 02-22-2025 08:58 PM Not that I know of. RE: Who is this? - Rob Wick - 02-22-2025 10:51 PM I have no earthly idea. Was he a politician? Best Rob RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 02-23-2025 06:10 AM He knew Abraham Lincoln well, but he was not a politician. RE: Who is this? - AussieMick - 02-23-2025 03:27 PM Is the button or badge significant? RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 02-23-2025 04:21 PM I do not think so. Years after the Lincoln Presidency he became an author and an inventor. RE: Who is this? - AussieMick - 02-23-2025 04:26 PM Is he a US citizen? RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 02-23-2025 04:44 PM Yes, and he has been previously mentioned on this forum. RE: Who is this? - Anita - 02-23-2025 06:22 PM That's the hint I needed! William O. Stoddard. RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 02-23-2025 07:09 PM Right, Anita!! I got the idea from one of Gene's recent posts. Stoddard was one of Lincoln's secretaries, although (IMO) not as well-known as Hay and Nicolay. RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 05-25-2025 02:57 AM Please...no googling. This man met Abraham Lincoln during his presidential years. He noted the following: "I saw this kind-hearted, noble man several times during the war. On two occasions I was present at public receptions given by him. Tall in stature, long-limbed, with an honest, homely, and sad face of which his very soul seemed to speak, he had a kind word and genial smile for all, however lowly, who approached him. Taking my hand in his with a firm, full grasp, his words were, "How do you do sir? I am glad to see you." Whose words are these? RE: Who is this? - Gene C - 05-25-2025 08:01 AM Frederick Douglas ? RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 05-25-2025 01:35 PM Nope, not Douglass. RE: Who is this? - Rob Wick - 05-25-2025 09:38 PM I'm sure this isn't correct, but Edward Everett? Best Rob RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 05-26-2025 03:58 AM Nope, not Everett. It is a familiar name on this forum, and he is most often mentioned under one particular topic. RE: Who is this? - RJNorton - 05-27-2025 02:21 PM This is a really hard question, and I think I will give the answer. These are the words of Louis Weichmann. It is in Weichmann's book - p. 6. |
