Excellent, David. Indeed it was General William T. Sherman. My source for the quote: Lincoln as I Knew Him: Gossip, Tributes, and Revelations from His Best Friends and Worst Enemies edited by Harold Holzer, p. 157.

Kudos, David.

The quotation is from one of my favorite sections in Team of Rivals.

No googling, please.

What is the name of the person who noted the following about President Lincoln?

"This man’s appearance, his pedigree, his low coarse jokes and anecdotes, his vulgar similes, his frivolity, are a disgrace to the seat he holds."

Salmon Chase?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 10-09-2020 09:34 AM

I am sorry, Mike, but it wasn't Chase.

Just a guess, George McClellan ?

While it sounds like something Stanton might have said, I don't think that's the answer. To me, it smacks of something a southerner would have said. Wild guess, but Jefferson Davis?

Best
Rob

I am sorry, Gene and Rob, but it's not McClellan or Davis.

Sticking with my theory that it's a southerner, how about Mary Chesnut?

Best
Rob

I am sorry, Rob, it was not Mary Chesnut.

Among the gifts was a beautiful Lincoln statue for my office desk at home. I was deeply touched. It seems I did get through to some people with my answers to their inquires on Mr. Lincoln. For that I am so grateful.

that's great!

I am thinking it's an early quote of Edwin Stanton, before he came to know Lincoln.

Harriet Lane?

RE: Extra Credit Questions - RJNorton - 10-10-2020 04:50 AM

I am sorry, Dennis and Susan, but it's not Edwin Stanton or Harriet Lane.
